Five Homes Lost Before Brush Fire is Contained

Earlier in the month of July, a fast-moving brush fire made its way up the hillside and damaged five home before it was brought under control by firefighters. The San Bernardino fire department responded quickly but the fire spread rapidly.
According to reports, two of the five homes sustained heavy damage and three were completely destroyed. One person suffered injuries as did two firefighters. The injuries sustained were attributed to heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.
The fire has been named the Kendall Fire, and was first reported near North F Street and West Kendall Drive. It was first seen on Little Mountain’s south side. It wasn’t only people that were affected by the fire. A couple’s Chihuahua, Penny, alerted her owners to the fire and ran away as her people fled.
“She told us something was going on. We had no idea. Once we fled, she took off and we haven’t found her since,” said Gustavo Nava, one of Penny’s owners.
The fire was relatively small at first, covering less than an acre. It spread up the hillside and quickly covered approximately 8 to 10 acres. Thanks to the professional response of firefighters, the blaze was considered 50 percent contained later that same day. Evacuation orders were issued for homes off of Skylark Drive, affecting 20 residences.
