Cyclist Killed in Bus Accident
It doesn’t matter whether you’re heading to work or you’re just getting the blood pumping for your daily routine, but bike riding in the early morning can’t be beat. To some, it’s like the morning stretch. But when drivers do the wrong thing, the pleasant exercise can turn into a harrowing experience.
A bicyclist ran into a Foothills Transit bus in Pomona and lost his life. The bus itself was traveling north on White Avenue at the time of the incident, simply going about its daily routine. The person who hit the bus wound up in critical condition and died a little while later in the hospital.
The bus itself was equipped with cameras which should shed some light on the activities of the bicyclist and whether it was a simple accident, or if other factors were involved. The street was closed for four hours while police investigated the scene. The bicycle was flung far away from where the bicyclist was hit, and it had actually run over by a passing vehicle in the process. The bicycle rider was disoriented, and residents came out to protect him while they called authorities.
The contractors for Foothill Transit, First Transit, issued a statement. “Safety is a core value of First Transit, and a responsibility we take very seriously. We are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and are conducting an internal investigation as well. It is our policy, in any incident such as this, to remove the driver from service pending the outcome of the investigation,” said First Transit’s spokeswoman Stephanie Creech.
The rider was later transported to the hospital where he died. We send our condolences to his family.
