San Bernardino Checkpoint — Six DUI Suspects Arrested

Credit: Stacey HugginsThe main goal of checkpoints is not to arrest impaired drivers, but deter drivers from driving impaired in the first place. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, checkpoints can reduce alcohol-related crashes and fatalities by 20 percent. This figure only proves that conducting sobriety checkpoints is an effective technique to decrease the number of drunk drivers on the road as well as drugged driving related crashes.

To help achieve this goal, the San Bernardino Police Department Traffic Unit conducted an eight-hour DUI / driver’s license checkpoint starting at 6 p.m. Saturday in the 3200 block of North E Street. According to police officers, six DUI suspects were arrested. They also reported that they were able to —

  • Screen 566 vehicles
  • Make three non-DUI arrests
  • Cite or arrest eight motorists suspected of driving without a valid license
  • Impound two vehicles
  • Recover a stolen vehicle

Saturday’s checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
