Van Nuys Teacher’s Aide Arrested For Assaulting Students & Staff
Working with children can be rewarding. It can also be very stressful. Teachers and others who work with the young have a tremendous responsibility, but they are potentially liable to many charges which other professions never have to face. A special education teacher’s aide in Van Nuys was arrested after allegedly assaulting students and staff at an elementary school. Police were called to the scene around 8:40 in the morning.
According to media sources, the employee said she had not taken her medication that day, even as she kicked them and threw chairs. Police stated the woman had a mental illness and had suffered a “psychiatric episode.”
A police lieutenant said she “lost control” and began to throw objects around at students and teachers, injuring some of them. Teachers tried to subdue her before she could do more harm. An adult and two students were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The employee was taken to jail and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. She was granted $30,000 bail and will not be returning to the school.
According to neighbors, the woman lives with her mother. They did not seem to know her very well, however. They certainly didn’t expect anything like this incident.
