Sorority Donates Backpacks in Honor of Shooting Victim

Sororities and fraternities are often more generous than people may think. Community service and volunteer activities are often encouraged. Case in point: students at Jefferson Hunt Elementary School recently received backpacks filled with school supplies thanks to a local sorority.

Sigma Gamma Rho sorority has held what they call “Operation Book Bag” for more than six decades. The recipients of the backpacks accepted the gifts in honor of Travon Williams, 9, a local elementary school student who was killed on July 8 after being shot outside of a store in San Bernardino. Williams’s father and a family friend were also killed.

Shannon O’Brien, an organizer of the backpack giveaway, said, “We wanted to show up for the children in the community to remind them that we are here to support them, as they attempt to grapple with this senseless crime and move forward towards the healing process.”

Also involved in the giveaway were Walmart, Valley Star, Young Visionaries, Children’s Resources, Inc. and the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The sorority also delivered backpacks to students at Del Rosa Elementary.
